McCoy & Hiestand, PLC is proud to announce the winner of the 2024 “The 7th Amendment” scholarship. This scholarship encouraged students in all fields to think critically about the role that a jury plays in the civil jury process. The firm wanted applicants to engage with the concept of a jury trial and ask themselves: is the literal enactment of the 7th Amendment still reasonable?
Lily Hestjean, a first-year student at Rice University, is the proud recipient of the McCoy & Hiestand 7th Amendment Scholarship for Fall 2024. She is pursuing a major in Environmental Science with a minor in Social Policy Analysis and is on track to graduate in May 2028.
Lily hopes to pursue a career in food law and policy, with plans to work at a non-profit to advocate for environmental policy. Inspired by organizations such as the World Food Prize Foundation and Indiana Conservation Voters, Lily is passionate about creating policies and engaging in research that promotes sustainable food systems.
Outside the classroom, Lily is actively involved in community-focused initiatives. She volunteers with PAIR (Partnership for the Advancement and Immersion of Refugees), helps maintain a local community garden, and plans campus sustainability initiatives in Rice’s Environmental Committee. Looking ahead, Lily hopes to work for a federal agency like the USDA to combine her environmental science and policy expertise to help achieve a sustainable food system.
We’d like to congratulate Lily and wish her all the best as she pursues her goals!
