Summer months bring fun family activities and plenty of time spent outside. While sunshine can certainly lift your mood, too much sun can be harmful. Overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun can result in painful sunburns, premature aging of the skin, cataracts and immune system suppression.
By following a few simple steps, you can enjoy time in the sun while preventing overexposure.
Sunscreen
Generously apply sunscreen to all exposed skin approximately 15 minutes before going outside. Sunscreen should have an SPF of at least 30 and provide broad-spectrum protection. Whether you tan easily or you feel there are plenty of clouds in the sky, sunscreen should always be applied every two hours. More frequent application may be necessary if swimming or sweating.
Protective Clothing
A wide brimmed hat and sunglasses can block harmful rays from your eyes and face. If the sun is particularly harsh, a long sleeve shirt can help protect your skin.
Shade
Enjoying summer doesn’t have to mean baking in the sun. Seek shade whenever possible to help protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays.
UV Index
The UV Index forecast is issued daily by the National Weather Service and EPA. Checking the index can help you plan and prepare for your day. UV Index reading of 6 to 7 means you are at high risk of harm from unprotected sun exposure. Remember, UV rays are highest between 10am and 4pm so avoid being in direct sunlight during those times.
